Thorsmörk

Thorsmörk is yet another paradise for hikers. The area is known for its impressive mountain formations, deep valleys, glaciers and streams.

The two glaciers, Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull, create a unique and dramatic landscape. It is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers, and not least for Icelanders themselves. The Laugavegur hiking trail can start or end here, just as the Fimmvörðuháls trail can begin or finish here. It is even possible to combine them into a truly fantastic hike through a completely unique and varied terrain of about 80 km in total.

Getting all the way into Thorsmörk requires a 4x4 vehicle. Smaller and larger streams have to be crossed, and at the end either the large glacial river Krossá must be forded, or some not-so-small tributaries must be crossed, depending on whether the destination is Húsadalur, Langidalur, or Básar. It is possible either to take a mountain bus from Reykjavik or to drive on Route 1, park the car where the mountain bus turns onto road F249 to Thorsmörk, and get on the bus there.

In Thorsmörk there are plenty of options for overnight stays, whether in your own tent, a rented glamping tent, camper, room, cabin or dormitory. There are also shared kitchens, or it is possible to eat at the café in Húsadalur, which serves all meals of the day. Húsadalur is the “luxury spot”, while Langidalur and Básar are mountain hut areas without a café/restaurant, etc. All three places offer something different.
