Stuðlagil

In Jökuldalur, also called the Glacier Valley, lies the Stuðlagil canyon. Until a few years ago, it was one of the most unknown and best-hidden natural attractions in all of Iceland. A river from the northern side of Vatnajökull was dammed in connection with the construction of a power plant. The canyon is extraordinarily beautiful because of its hexagonal basalt columns.

The canyon is located about 70 kilometers from Egilsstaðir in East Iceland and requires a hike of approximately 8 kilometers round trip from a small parking lot. The parking lot is situated by a small bridge that crosses the Jökla River. The hike is scenic, and along the way there is a view of the Stuðlafoss waterfall and, depending on the season, a few streams to cross. But it is worth it!
