Skaftafell Nature reserve
Skaftafell is a nature reserve located in Vatnajökull National Park in southeast Iceland. It is a true oasis in the diverse landscape. The scenery is so beautiful that it used to be a national park in its own right. A paradise for photographers and hikers, with fantastic panoramic views and plenty of hiking trails, both short and long, and with varying levels of difficulty. This is also the starting point for ascending Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur. This hike should only be undertaken with a trained guide as part of an organized group. It is also possible to join guided group tours for climbing or hiking on the glacier. There are several providers offering these tours.
Good hiking maps can be purchased at the information center.
