Landmannalaugar
Located within the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Landmannalaugar is a highland area renowned for its breathtaking, colorful natural beauty and thermal hot springs—it is one of my absolute favorite places. It is a highly popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The area is characterized by vibrant rhyolite mountains, lava fields, and rugged terrain. Beautiful hiking trails lead you up into the landscape to the most stunning viewpoints. You can study the area's unique geology up close, and after a long day out, enjoy a dip in the natural hot spring. It is an ideal spot to set up basecamp for several days; there are so many impressions to soak in!Landmannalaugar is also the starting or ending point of the "Laugavegur" hiking trail. Laugavegur is ranked among the top 10 most beautiful hiking trails in the world! The route is described in its own dedicated post here on the site. With the right vehicle, you can easily drive to Landmannalaugar on your own—BUT the car must be a 4x4 and at least an SUV. Car rental companies go to great lengths to clarify whether their vehicles are suitable for the highlands. Be sure to choose the right vehicle for your intended route! A 4x4 SUV is not sufficient for all parts of the highlands. With a 4x4 SUV, you should take the northernmost road, where there are no rivers to cross. River crossings are required on the southern route, which is the one used by the large tourist mountain buses. The roads meet near the camp, so you should pass oncoming traffic slowly and carefully. The road in is a highland road, meaning it is full of large rocks and potholes and cannot be compared to Danish gravel roads—but trust me, it is worth it! Slow down and enjoy the beauty and the ruggedness. The camp at Landmannalaugar consists of a mountain station with a camping area. It is possible to book indoor accommodation in multi-bed dorms; otherwise, you can pay for a tent pitch at the information desk. Food can be prepared and eaten either outside at picnic tables or inside a large tent. Toilet and shower facilities are located in a separate building.Hiking maps of the area can be purchased at the information desk, where you can also check the weather forecast.

Landmannalaugar is relatively easy to get to and does not require extensive mountain experience. With common sense, a hiking map, waterproof and warm clothing, and by sticking to the trails, which are well marked, it becomes an experience that will not be forgotten! Always remember to check the weather forecast before heading out into the terrain!
Landmannalaugar is one of the absolute favorite places. It has been visited many times and there is no doubt it will be revisited. There is still more to explore!
